Integrated Genome Factory (IGF) has begun a collaboration with BKHIT Jawa Barat (Balai Karantina Hewan, Ikan, dan Tumbuhan Jawa Barat) to help detect invasive fish species in the waters of West Java.
Who is BKHIT Jawa Barat?
BKHIT Jawa Barat is West Java’s regional implementation unit of Badan Karantina Indonesia (Indonesian Quarantine Agency). As the quarantine authority for animals, fish, and plants in the province, it serves as the front line in strengthening food security and protecting natural biological resources, including monitoring and controlling the spread of invasive species that threaten local ecosystems and the aquaculture industry.
BKHIT Jawa Barat has long been one of IGF’s institutional clients, and this collaboration takes that partnership into new territory.
What are we doing together?
IGF has started a survey to detect the presence of invasive (alien) fish species in West Java’s waters, supporting BKHIT Jawa Barat’s quarantine and biosecurity mandate.
Where traditional identification can be slow or ambiguous — especially for juveniles, damaged specimens, or closely related species. IGF brings its DNA-based detection, metabarcoding capabilities to deliver precise identification. This makes it possible to confirm whether there is a native species or an invasive one, faster and with higher confidence.

Looking ahead
This first survey is the beginning of a longer-term, cross-disciplinary program. IGF and BKHIT Jawa Barat aim to keep building on this collaboration, refining sampling workflows and developing a more precise and comprehensive detection methods for invasive species, so that West Java’s aquatic ecosystems could be monitored and protected with confidence.
